Original 1916 Flag of Fort Wayne, In

I am sorry that this is not a great photo, but the flag is encased in plastic for preservation. This is the original flag of Fort Wayne, In that was designed in 1916 by Guy Drewett and sewn by his wife Mahala Drewett on dark blue and white silk. It represents the 3 rivers that converge in Fort Wayne and the 2 stars represent Indianapolis and Fort Wayne which are the largest cities in Indiana. In 1934 it was redesigned again by Guy adding more to the flag to further represent Fort Wayne. These two flags are the original and official flags of Fort Wayne. This flag is housed in the Fort Wayne Historical Museum although it is not on display for the general public. I am very fortunate to know Mary Spice, 2nd daughter of Guy and Mahala Drewett and she arranged for me to take this photo. Photo by Sharon Lee copyright 2009

I do not know her, but I'm sure she knows my grandmother! As they would have been first cousins. My grandmother's name was also 'Mary', but went by 'Suzy' from the time she was born, her nickname. Yes, we live in Indiana; I'm in FW!

Artist Reply: How wonderful that you live in Ft Wayne. Do you call Mary, or get to see her? If not she would love to talk with you she is in the phone book.

Awesome photo. My grandmother is niece to Guy & Mahala (her parents were Arthur & Irma Drewett). I only recently learned this tidbit of family history from grandma, how delighted I was to find a photo! What a treat, thank you.

Artist Reply: Oh my goodness do you live in Indiana? That is amazing. Do you know Mary, Mahala's daughter?

what luck for you to have known the daughter and such a grand thing that she let you take the picture. History is such a grand thing and to be able to capture in film just perfect I think you did a grand job with the shot nice

Artist Reply: Hi Gerry, I was thrilled to be able to go there and take this as well, because this flag is not on display, it is in the archives way upstairs in the Historic Building. Thanks so much for visiting and for your nice comments on all of my pics

I THINK THAT IT IS A GREAT PHOTO, SHARON. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING.

Artist Reply: Hi Sharon, thanks. I really needed to stand on a latter, but I didn't have one, and it was very shiny, and I had a hard time not get a glare!!
