anyhow

"anyhow" is 12 X 12 inches, oils painted on velvet-covered, recycled plywood. The painting is signed "B.B.", and it is finished in a heavy, black painted frame, which is hand-crafted from recycled wood. I painted "anyhow" within weeks of meeting my wife, Kathy, in early 2004. On the right half of the painting, Kathy sits in a chair as she reflects, which is her most useful strategy for meeting the chalenges of her bi-polar disorder. "anyhow" is based on a description Kathy casually offered of her everyday life at the time I painted it (and long before I married her). On the right half of the painting, I depict that part of Kathy's experience that we can share--that visible part, during which there is observable evidence and rational (though not entirely accurate)form and substance. On the left half of the painting, I depict that part of Kathy's experience that is not visible, except perhaps through the eyes of those who suffer from untreated bipolar disorder. Velvet is a very difficult (albeit a very special) surface to paint on. The oils must be applied much more liberally to the velvet surface than to wood, and the drying time for each color is much less predictible. Nonetheless, "anyhow" was the second in a series of four paintings on velvet that I completed in 2005.
