In July 2004 we did this hike to Summerland. This year it will be at least the end of the month before we can reach this elevation. For those who have tried to keep track of these hikes, this place is on the NE edge of Mt. Rainier so is a little different angle to the mountain.(Little Tahoma Peak is just to the left of this photo.) The mountian face to the right is mostly Emmons Glacier with evidence of an avalanche that broke away near the top. The second shot of rock and snow is where you would continue on if you were hiking around Mt. Rainier on the Wonderland Trail, a 93 mile trek. You can kind of get an idea of the vast area by realizing that there are people on the small rock in the center. We watched them approach the rock from below and then head to the left. I wonder how they knew where the trail was. We occasionally lose a trail in much less snow than this... :)
