Thimougie (Belgium) 2006

This is the village of Thimougie in Belgium. It will be auctioned off at the Belgian-American Club fund raiser in June. (One of my paintings was auctioned for $35, not even the price of the material.) It is for a good cause, however. The paradox is that artists are often asked to contribute works, but are in the worst financial situation. Fortunately, I have a day job.

Hello David! Anne's right, this is a charming series. I do so love these little Belgian village scenes with their neat rows of cottages. Love the use of red too. It's a colour that makes me feel alive!!! Love it! Briliant artwork!

Another beautiful painting, David. There has also been some talk in the art world about art auctions contributing to a decline in the prices of contemporary art, with some collectors choosing to wait for the art auctions to score a good deal. It may be true to some extent, given the proliferation of art auctions as a fundraising tool. It seems that when the pieces sell for such a low price at these events, the artist is the only one making any sacrifice to further the good cause. I suppose it is part of the role of the artist to stand for certain principles, while the rest of society can simply consume art as product or investment. Patrons should be educated to the true value of what they are purchasing and should also be motivated to contribute to cause. Some art auctions I have donated to allow the artist to set the opening bid and split the sale price with the artist, but they do not sell every piece.
