New York Harbor: The Wall Street Ferry ca. 1885

This is a 29"x41" water color of Soouth Street in New York shortly after the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883. The name of the horse drawn vehicles waiting to board the docked ferry are completely forgotten except for their name which was the Omnibus. They were essentially high capacity stage coaches which were able to go any where in an urban environment comparitively quickly in a very complex network of streets that were found in an urban environment. The name Omnibus has a broad general meaning as an adjective or a noun as a quality of or a device possesing the quality of extrraodinary range extraodinary range, mobility and versatility.

Artist Reply: Sailing ship rigging is one of My faforie aspects of maritime art. Ships rigging is to maritime art what tinsel is to a Christmas tree. There is a basic logic to ship rigging. There are standard rigging plans for each type of sailing ship of the 19th century. Many ships like the Cutty Sark at times had customized rigging plans for special requirements for navigating the waters in certain parts of the world. These custom rigging plans were still related to the original plans and the original plans are the only ones of which I am aware that there is any historical record.
