On Yggdrasil, the tree of the psyscoria, which pulls entire planets into its root for sustenence, there dwell horrible fifth-dimensional creatures called malevores. These beings enslave lesser creatures to do their will and feed them the emotional castoffs of fear, hatred, and despair. Over the millennia, the malevores have grown quite adept at promoting these emotions in their lairs, and most, including the great malevore Hecate, have learned how to pass a portion of their essence into a mortal shell that they can control. When Melissa stayed behind to guard her comrades' escape from Yggdrasil after the tanu overlord Midgard's attempt to infect the tree, she was captured by Hecate's minions, the three Erinyes Alecto, Megeara, and Tisiphone.
