Artist Bio

Abstract Expressionist painter Gretchen Travers is a most unique artist who has created her own venues and situations in order to communicate to the public on a broad scale the ideas and dynamic of art in the present and why it is essential to us/our lives. Her work, found in many private and corporate fine art collections, has a startling beauty and simplicity that speaks for itself ....the depth of her work gives respite (sanctuary) ...and the thing we need most: inspiration. (inspired we can do anything). She is the only artist to ever have a show in the Sears Tower lobbies, and her show in the windows of a block long building on one of busiest shopping streets in the world, Chicago's Magnificent mile (Michigan Avenue)-- provoked much reaction and discussion among Chicagoans. Subsequently her Oak Street Public Studio project brought people a lot closer yet to art: she had her studio open to the public for a year on Oak Street in Chicago, often called the Rodeo Drive of the Midwest. inviting people in to talk and be part of the process/dynamic of the everyday creation process.

Art collectors have said of her work, that even after looking at a piece of hers for ten years, they continue to see new ideas, new depths in it that they had not seen before. And they tend to keep her work, not giving it up for auction at Sothebys or Christies or museum collections. Travers oeuvre to date does include only one limited edition of 15 lithographs, the entire edition held by a Chicago art collector.

Travers is working on a groundbreaking project called "Unconceal" involving new art forms that will be a complete walk-through environment involving ancient and modern themes and energies. Using realistic images of an ancient Greek temple juxtaposed with her abstract work, she is creating a unique and complex environment that mirrors the complexity and richness of our modern existence. The show will be premiered in cities around the world, beginning with Chicago.
