Self Portrait

Phillip Jones was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1962, he got his first camera at six. He attended his first photo workshop in 1970, it was a weeklong event. He learned so many techniques on how to compose a photo. The most important skill he mastered was how to manipulate and bend light. Jones always had a dream then, of owning his own Photo Studio. Jones became a professional in 1980 after entering the U.S. Air Force. He read every book that was available in each library that he would visit. He took a correspondence courses with the New York Institute of Photography to learn the craft of the Great Masters. He attended the University of Las Vegas to study Photography in Aug 1982. He soon discovered there after he was offered a job as faculty teaching Photography due to my wealth of knowledge that he had obtained after reading so many books and numerous publications.

During his stay in Las Vegas, around 1983 Jones bought a 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 large format cameras because of the unlimited movements and adjustments that were possible, very expensive to operate. He found a Graflex 6 x 7 with Polaroid backs and several lenses at a flea market which was a cheaper to shoot because it used 120 or 220 roll film.

Around 1996 Jones wanted to create a new unique style of hand coloring photos using techniques that were afforded the Great Masters of the past using dry pigments. In 1999 he moved to Atlanta where he rented a darkroom and bought the needed supplies to develop black and white prints. He uses double weight fiber based paper and the result was better than he expected.

Jones had his first Black and White Art Exhibit in 2002 in Birkenfeld, Germany where he displayed for the first time hand tinted black and white photos process the Classic Way. Jones has shown his black and white hand tinted photo art at numerous exhibits in Southern Germany over the last 12 years.

Jones taught Digital and Analog Photographer in 2006-2009 for Child Youth Services for Beginners to High School. Currently he give private photography lesson to groups 5-10 in 4 block session for intermediate and professional.

Since 2009 Jones took a sabbatical from the analog world and worked as Chief Photographer in Public Affairs at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. He worked directly with major networks and media outlets; he has taken over 100,000 photos during his tenure. He has been published on numerous occasions in Medical Journals, Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times, Marine Times, Magazines, Newspapers, TV, and on Social Media.
