BIO: Nature, beauty and art have always been part of Alexs life. As a child she traveled throughout the Far East Middle-America and the U.S. with her Diplomat parents, who were also avid art collectors. Surrounded by the lush vegetation of the tropics with its bright colored wildlife combined with the exquisite antiques her parents collected, beauty was everywhere. China, Thailand, The USA and Mexico, the different cultures and native wildlife instilled in her a love of al things beautiful and a strong desire to express herself creatively. As a child she drew instinctively and later won prizes in school competitions with her natural talent. All this made an indelible impression upon her mind, thus shaping the future artist. Trained initially as a Goldsmith, she graduated as a Designer Craftsman in the UK, and then moved on to work as a photography stylist. Missing the international travel, she signed up as a Flight Attendant and traveled extensively throughout the Southern states of the USA. Native American culture and art captivated her to the extent that it became a serious interest and subject of study. The native Americans closeness to nature and animals fascinated her and developed into a very special affinity with these peoples. Meanwhile, Alex branched out to Haute Couture, designing body-molded draped evening-and cocktail-dresses in sumptuous flowing fabrics for exclusive clients. Silk being her favorite fabric, she started researching ways to paint on it and soon developed her own formula, medium and technique to suit that specific textile. From there on, she started experimenting with painting on leather. Thus, everything came together. It was only a small step to designing supple leather garments, painted with household pets and wildlife pictures. The eyes - which are the window to the spirit and soul of the animals she depicts - are her specialty, and therefore the focal point of her work. Due to the naturalness of the leather and Alexs love of native American culture, the collection soon took on a Country and Western atmosphere. Nighthawk Western Art was born. Always on the lookout for new challenges to expand her self-taught extensive skills, Alex enrolled in a course on china/porcelain painting at a renowned school in the USA several years ago. Not surprisingly, she now also excels in this very fine art. As with silk and leather painting, the process is a matter of knowledge of mediums and coloring, painstaking patience and incredible detail. Alex is enthralled by all animal life and lives and works surrounded by nature. The gardens and large wooded area around her house provide sanctuary for the local song-birds, owls and bats. These populations thrive in c-operation with the National Wildlife Federations nest-box project. Also, the National Otter re-introduction project initiated by the above Federation has her special interest. Moreover, Alex is also a well-known cat-lover and Somali-expert. The kittens she raises in her Somali-cattery (aided by her Boxer dog The Fonz) are known internationally for their beauty, character, and adaptability. Alex has exhibited widely, and regularly figures prominently in magazines. She is a member of WWF and many other Wildlife Societies. Her goal is to contribute, through her art, to the support of wildlife nationally and internationally, for future generations.
