Artist Statement
MHJ Glass Design is a partnership of two glass artists, Mischka Hunter and Mariel Waddell. We are both graduates of the Hot Glass Forming program at Sheridan School of Craft and Design. We have be working with glass together since 2003. After Mariel graduated in 2007 we became apart of Kingston Glass Studio and Gallery, located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Mischka applied to the Crafts and Design Program, because he knew he wanted to make objects, and after working with glass for only a few short weeks the material resonated with him. Mischka enjoys the physical process of working the glass to create simple forms, which he then alters. Much of his work is inspired by childhood memories. In his New and Used series he refers to the natural decay of objects such as machinery found on his aunt and uncles farm. He enjoys creating a contrast of textures on his forms. Mischka takes advantage of the optical qualities of the glass when engraving, while at the same time obscuring parts of the surface. Mischka's goal is to create objects that will hold meaning in the future.
Nature and Ocean life has influenced Mariels work heavily. While using hot glass she reasearched nature from her homeland of Trinadad. She tries to capture the beauty and pureness of the life within the ocean. Mariel has a strong interest in sculpting glass while it's hot. Her bit work has repersented the colours, forms and eccentricity of sea life on the Caribbean ocean reefs. She uses the inspiration from ocean reefs and takes pieces of it to create abstract forms. Continuous exploration of glass has allowed her to further express her ideas. The malleable quality of glass provides the ideal medium for the physical expression of her love of sclupture and ocean.
