How Voting Works

Several of you have asked how exactly our voting process works, so here is the explanation...

Votes are collected for one week after the contest ends. We capture the ArtWanted.com Member ID along with the persons IP address from the computer they are voting from. Only one vote per person, per entry is accepted. If two votes are received from the same person on the same image, the highest rating is kept and the lower one is deleted.

In order to get as many votes as possible, we do allow anonymous people to vote for the contest. However by capturing the IP address, we can remove any duplicate votes from the same person. Only about 10-15% of the votes are from these non-ArtWanted.com members.

We tally all of the votes of our members only, then tally the votes including anonymous visitors. If the anonymous votes change the 1st-4th place winners, they are all thrown out and only the member votes count. Otherwise, they are included in the total votes. To date, we have never thrown out any votes, because the anonymous votes aren't enough to change the contest standings.

We throw out the highest & the lowset vote (2 total) to get a more accurate average. We also scan the votes for someone that has voted really high for an image and very low for all the other entries. These 'favoritism' votes are also thrown out and not counted. Our staff also votes for every contest and their rankings are counted as double-votes.

We encourage everyone to vote for all entries, but it's not required. We take voting averages for each piece, so it doesn't matter if they received 10 or 100 votes, it all works out. However, there is less than 5% variance in the total number of votes per image, so most people are voting for every entry.

The winners are notified via e-mail on how to claim their prize(s) or they can contact us directly.

With all these steps in place, we feel that we have a very accurate and fair way to judge all entries. We hope that everyone is enjoying our weekly contests and we encourage you to participage as an entrant or a voter. Enjoy!

I was under the impression that we could only enter one piece per artist but I saw that a few people entered more than one painting. Just wondering how that works. Thanks

I thought we could only enter one image, that is not so ? Darn, didn't know that. I only entered one because I thought that was what we were supposed to do. Oh well, I enjoy it either way:)

I too saw a few entries from the same artists! It says in the contest rules that it's only 1 entry per artist! I'm confused now! How did they manage to enter more than one piece of work?

It actually states in the contest rules: "You can submit as many letters as you want to, but make sure they are well done and original. Each letter with the highest votes will be published in the book."

Some contests you can only submit one image per person, but not this one.

hi i find your contest interesting but somehow vague concerning voting, because firstly voters may be anyone who is not actually aware of a piece of artwork or as a member can not recognize values of different sorts of art work. thus results may have winners not very much favoured by majority of art criticques generally, also i notice the chart is very difficult to understand because the sum of votes recieved doesn't equal the sume of columns regarding number of votes, moreso, in comparison with other art work one art work which is higher in ranking gets lesser votes on chart columns than a work art with lesser ranking in the result of contest results.

I think entering more than one item is unfair to be honest.I also read that "ONLY ONE IMAGE PER PERSON"..I wish AW would make it's mind up,as I did ask if I could change my original entry for another and guess what...no reply!!Again we are seeing differering rules.I am bloody fuming and won't enter any more of these inane comps...!!

This was the first time that I have entered a contest at this site, but I'm not new at entering contest at many other sites and am aware that from time to time the "rules" may change. I could have sworn that it stated only one entry per person and also the closing date for this contest went over it's closing date by several days allowing many, many more entries to be posted after the closing date. I didn't think that this was fair either and for my first experience at contests here, I am very disappointed and discouraged at my first experience at AW contests!

Thanks for the votes all.

I've entered a lot of art competitions over the years. One a few ribbons a smattering of notoriety but they're fun and you get to see some excellent and new work. For the record though, the rules clearly state, "one entry per artist" Cheers, Greg

You also don't require everyone to vote on every image. This greatly skews the voting in favor of whoever has the most votes. In a recent contest, the winner had 44 votes as compared to the contestants at the other end of the spectrum only had about 24 votes. I do not see that as a fair and balanced way of comparing works. I don't see how voting very highly for one image and very low on others (this gets the vote thrown out per AW rules) is different than voting on one or a few images and not on others. To me, it's the same action.

Require voters to vote on all images. It will make them pan through all of the entries, get exposed to all of the artists, and provide a more fair and balanced vote.

In a recent photography contest the rules stated that no digital altering of images was allowed, yet several of the entries are somewhat to very obviously altered.

I see that AW is not particular concerned about this, especially when one appears, to me and one commenter at least, to have been selected a winner. Any chance of changing that?

Just a note regarding the "one entry per artist..." Here is the exact wording from ArtWanted posting the contest:

THEME: Santa Artwork ENTRY DATES: Dec 9 - Dec 21, 2008 VOTE DATES: Dec 22 - Dec 28, 2008

RULES: The submission must be artwork that you have done yourself. No photographs for this contest please. Entry must fit the theme of the contest. Please do not mention your name or have links in your contest description. Only one entry per person, so make them count!

Congratulations to the winners.
