WingedHeart

ever watching

wrapped with caution

crowned king

amongst the blind

wings unfettered

feathers falling

struggling against

the ties that bind

Cool symbolism and image

The poem obviously refers to the image and so i was wondering if there should not be 'feathers falling' apparent in the image - just an idea i don't see a struggle more a 'captive' you did say this was part of a bigger work though i might be missing the point

best wishes

I can tell you spent a ton of time on those wings. I did feathers once on a angel.... cut and pasted those feathers on....

Good work!

thanks wendy! i wrote the poem when i posted the picture. it didn't exist before so it was kind of improv. not sure what the larger worker "machinations" that this heart will be part of is going to be about necessarily...another surrealism.something to do with time...

thanks talia! yeah the wings definitely took the most time. about a day just on them. all in all this was about two or three day work from just looking at a blank screen to completion.

Hi Hinsel, you've got a pretty cool image here. Very colourful and like the details of the wings. Good job. :) Keep creating!

Nice image Hinsel, I like it....

Hinsel Scott 26 Jan 2005

thanks jenny !

thanks mandible! i was going to have it be just a plain heart but the more i looked at it the more it seemed to need "something"...hehehe

Sorry to jump in Juan...Hinsel, it's the "Sacred Heart" image, Christ's heart with a crown of thorns. A Roman Catholic image, when displayed in the home is supposed to bring blessings to the home and it's inhabitants.

Many Latino homes have mini altars...here's some info for you...

(quote from NCR online.org)"Altars in Hispanic homes testify to a centuries-old tradition that makes visible the link between the spiritual and the physical world. Combining crucifixes, statues of the Virgin Mary and saints with photos of family members who have passed away and objects associated with them, Hispanic home altars are about honoring family relationships and connecting the living with the dead, said scholar Lara Medina, assistant professor of Chicano and Chicano studies at California State University in Northridge.

The popularity of home altars is undergoing a revival, Medina and other scholars say, driven by an influx of new immigrants from Latin America...

Depending on the Latino group, home altars may feature images of the Sacred Heart, the Virgin of Guadalupe, St. Martin de Porres or the Virgin of Charity of Cobre (patroness of Cuba), said David Abalos, professor of religious studies and sociology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. There is almost always a statue, candles around it, pictures of family, people who have died. Its a family altar as well as the religious symbols and icons there, he said." (unquote)

Hope that helps you understand why Juan made the statement. :) It is a great piece of iconography you have produced - those wings must have taken a long time. I used to detest when the "Harley enthusiast" tattoo customers of mine wanted eagles with spread wings in their tats!! LOL

You are all about archetypical symbolism, aren't you? Tapping into some STUFF inside. Reminds me - bring on more of that tarot deck!

thanks for the extra info dawn -- hope my image isn't sacriligeous in any way ? i mean...the eye after all is a symbol of vision in many cultures...

creating a link between the visible and spirit world...i like that idea alot. thats part of what arts all about for me...

definitely tapping in dawn. definitely.yknow what they say: more room out than in ! hehee!

the tarot is still sloooowly in the works...am stuck on "the chariot" right now...it is a pretty detailed card. i don't know if i will ever get done! hehe!

Dawn Schmidt 27 Jan 2005

I know the feeling Hinsel - my underwater tarot has taken a back seat to "must do's", too!! I don't think your image is sacriligeous...if someone thinks it is, it is perhaps their perception, not your intent, right?

(So, did you sketch this before you did the digital?) ;)

Hinsel Scott 27 Jan 2005

certainly not my intent, no, this is an image from my head...i claim no responsibilty for it other than that! hehe! where it goes after its out is not my concern! hehe!

no sketch my friend. more and more i sit down with the blank screen and just begin!

no bounce no play, right ?

Dawn Schmidt 27 Jan 2005

woo hoo - you are living life on the edge, my man! or the "edge" of the screen at least - LOL. (ps: did you check out the portrait I did of you in Andree's thread? OH, and I saw that boneman contacted you last night, too - I am sending him a package of cool finds to use in his projects. Namaste!)
