Ratings

Something has got to be done about the Rating System,[I know Dead Horse,BUT!]

It is totally ridiculous for someone with Two Tens to beat out someone with 35 Tens and one 9 such as Sher, for the top ten.

Rating by Views aren,t fair either, because a lot of times we click on a thumbnail just to see the Piece more clearly, not because we like the Peice.

And when a piece comes up randomly that isn't fair either.

If you were the person with two tens, wouldn't you think that you deserved to be higher than the other person?

We are open to suggestions to fix this 'problem'.

I got two tens on one of my scupltures, although it was cool it might have gotten me a bit more of exposure I didnt really think much of it, In fact it seemed kind of silly to me that I only had two comments and ratings and they were both tens and it got me a Top Ten.. as far as Im concered it didnt count lol.

I feel allot better about myself if Im rated by several people and given a 10 and that achives a "Top Ten"

Earl Kelley 24 Jan 2005

I would absolutely have no problem with it.

Heck I could join with two bogus names and put myself in the top ten most every day.

Maybe you should use points and add them up for the best of the day.

I.E. 10's count 10

9's count 9 and so forth.

And so the same person doesn't hog the top tens all the time, maybe you can only be in the top ten once a week.

Come on and think people, there has to be a better way, that is fair.

AW I know this is a difficult problem and I'm not "Blaming" you,I just think something has to be done.

It just isn't right that "One" vindictive person could keep someone out of the top ten forever just by giving a 9 rating.

And with a 9 being a top rating they probably would not get any feedback or repercussion.

My two cents:

Currently the top ten reports are generated by a specified time period -

A montly report should be generated on the first of the next month & should not change until the next month so anyone who made the cutoff stays there for a month.

A weekly report should be the same - pick a day of the week & it doesn't change till the next week.

If the points are total - then people with the most images & rated images will be at the top of the list, if the points average then an image with two tens can beat out any image that has ever got a nine.

Ultimately though (in the current system) there's no way to moderate favoritism - certain artists will still dominate the top ten if they get the most traffic on their images.

One way to change that is to make the ratings we give a function of the average rating we give - make us responsible for keeping our average at a five. If all we give is 10's then everyone is average.

Related question - when will be able to comment on an image without giving it a rating? There are many images I would like to leave a comment on but I have turned off my ratings because all anyone gives is 8-10. Its somewhat ridiculous to watch the same person that gave you a ten give everyone they rate that day a ten as well regardless of the quality of the image.

Although I've gotten some top tens with three or four tens only I tend to agree - I think that one that gets TEN tens and one 9 should win over one with several tens and nothing else! My main thing though is that there should be something with a longer time frame to recognize works that get very high ratings like MOSTLY tens and a decent amount of them - I know nothing is perfect but one can come on late in the day, post something and get two tens and nothing else and end up on top ten the next day and another can get a LOT of tens but one nine early on and get NO recognition - potential buyers coming to the site would never see anything special about those works. Just my opinion.

Problem is - those who comment most get most comments and the same thing will happen -n the same people will always be in the top ten - I say get rid of it

Hello Earl...

..and eek, using me as the example... : )

First, all the comments humble me and honest to goodness i feel so embraced by the magic of touching others with my work. A 9 doesnt feel bad... we all should use that number more often...(including me)

~Maybe a limit on tens a day...say one 10 to match the categories...i think theres 7 categories..so 7 tens...?

Maybe a member campaign of 'NoFearofThe 9...' : )

..and the ratings generate a frenzy of member use, unlike when there were just comments a year ago...i saw a huge difference once the ratings were re-implemented...membership flew through the roof...

But i do understand what youre saying Earl... just don't worry about me, i've been here a year and had many days in the sun...

Have an Ohappy day!

I definitly agree with Earl-I have seen images with like 15-10 ratigs and along came one 9 and the artist did not make the top ten.

Renate Dartois 24 Jan 2005

I just wanted to add I too think there is nothing wrong with getting 9's I was agreeing with Earl there is no balance right now.

eileen martin 24 Jan 2005

many flaws ,i agree, i personally keep my own tally based on number of comments, regardless of the numbers, if an image gets lots of comments, then i think it did well. if the same people want to be on the top ten all the time, then let them. it causes me no harm or distress, so i don't give too much concern to it. i do understand your point though , Earl.

I try my damnist to stay out of the top 10, and it's working so far. Though I made the list 1 time. Even than I just kept saying to myself " give it time and before you know it the top 10 will be a thing of the past". Guess what....I was right! Since than I haven't been pestered with reassurance That I'm a 10, lol. Mind over matter I'd tell ya. ;)

Lucas Seven 24 Jan 2005

...dump it...'problem' solved...

RQ Trietsch 25 Jan 2005

You could also make it by having to have a minimum number of ratings to be qualified to participate in the top 10.

Like the infamous 200 hundred comments before you could see who rated you.

Norm, My feelings exactly. It's a joke for all concerned. Lucas, Oh wise one!

Volunteer of America 26 Jan 2005

Maybe a limit on the number of 10's you can pass out...(10 a month or so.) then limit 9's to 25 a month. This might inject a trace of reality into an otherwise ridiculously "inflated" system. (Remember, that at one time in the early 1920's it took over a BILLION marks to purchase a loaf of bread in Germany...because the government ran the presses night and day printing currency. It's an analog of providing an unlimited number of 10's to rate with.)

My ratings have been off for nearly a year.
