mirrored photographs

I have been playing around with mirrored images. I love the look of them but I don't see many other photographers doing them. Is it because they are considered too gimmicky? If I submit them to a juried photography show will they be taken seriously?

Mirrored or cloneing? If it's a clone you don't have a prayer.

Neat picture however you acheived it.

RQ, the original photo is duplicated, then flopped and placed side by side with the original.

Nice work..like the effect given.

Mark Peterson 07 Jan 2005

I often use this effect in my digital work, but because it is not well excepted and thought by many to not be a true talent, is no reason for me to not stick to my true ideals. I really like the effect, but not everyone is into symmetry....so it's an artistic challenge to present it in such a way that it will be excepted.

Regardless of whatever others might think I do what I like and do my best to learn from it. And I always remember that for every person who does not like my work there is someone that does.

Good luck to you.

So it's as I suspected, not well respected. I'll keep it in my back pocket...and maybe try to create some kind of opportunity for it. Thanks Juan & Mark.

Judy I absolutely love the second image - there is sort of a stained glass/cathedral window near the center. It's almost a teardrop shape. Makes you feel as if you are entering holy space, especially with the "arches" in the background.

Let's see more!

Judy Olson 07 Jan 2005

Hi Dawn, here's more holy arches (and thank you!)

Dawn Schmidt 07 Jan 2005

yummy colors, too

I really like the last two images - it's really interesting how you've created a second reality which merges with the first - to then create a third....wha?

That technique works really well on waterfalls also...

Maggi Carstairs 08 Jan 2005

It works well with cats. Grin!!!!!!!!!

I actually love the effect on landscapes...and it can cut uninteresting foregrounds.....

Maggi Carstairs 08 Jan 2005

Landscapes can be interesting with this concept... You can also use the mirage tool for the same effect...

Hi Mark (VoA) I have a waterfall that I call The Face of God. Love the "siamese" cats! Ok, this is fun, but is it art? Exhibitable?

RQ Trietsch 08 Jan 2005

I would keep submitting them Judy. Eventually like most art forms they become accepted.

But in your case, you are far better than most for creating art in this method.

Thank you RQ, there is a photography regional call for entries (Albany, NY) open till Feb 1st, so I will submit 1 or 2 of this type. And thanks for the encouragement.

you have chosen excellent subjects for your photos. Unique and enjoyable. it would be kinda cool if you found a way to mirror an image into the shape of a face.

Fred Odle 08 Jan 2005

great stuff Judy, keep producing.

Terrell Smith-Dorfeo 08 Jan 2005

those images are great!

Who cares if they're considered gimmicky or if some people don't like them? If you enjoy doing them and get pleasure from the results, then keep going and good luck to you!

I appreciate the support from Jane and all who wrote. Jane, I do pursue what I like just for the heck of it, but I really am trying hard to support myself with/by my art. I have just completed a moderately successful first year "on my own" (no regular job), and want to devote most of my time to art that will sell or be shown at least. I wasn't sure of the market for these mirrored things, as I have never seen them for sale or on exhibit around here (upstate New York). Thanks again!
