"THE LAST OF THE REAL COWBOYS"

Hi everyone.

I started my next painting today. This is another good friend that I met a while back. His name is Gene Hartung. Gene is soon to be 72 years old. Gene lives right across the Buffalo Bill Dam from us. He happen to walk into our store/gallery and Leigh knows exactly who I am on the constant lookout for. She immediately asked him if he would pose for me. He told her how my mentor, James Bama had ask him the same question several years ago. He agreed to pose for him. He took the photos. What a shame, Bama never painted him! "His loss, is my gain."

Last Monday, during a driving snow storm, him and I got together for my photo shoot at his log home. I actually posed him in the exact same clothes Bama did, except for the shirt.

Gene had a favorite saddle as a young cowboy. It was completely wore out and now gone. Since the Bama shoot, Gene had taken up saddle making. He wanted to make an exact copy which he set out to do. He had never made a saddle before. Working totally from memory, he actually made four saddles until he was happy with the forth one. He sold the other three saddles, one went to a buyer in England. He was so proud of his saddle. I had to pose him with it!! What a thing of beauty!!

Here is one of my other photographs of Gene. You can see, it was "putting it down!!"

This is version one. Still pretty rough. You should see a big difference in version two.

Hi Terry, RQ and Melissa. "Long-time-no-see" Melissa! Thanks for the kind words.

Here is today's work. I have Gene's face, bone necklace and Stetson pretty much detailed. A little more on his face once it dries. I managed to get his leather vest and shirt roughed in today.

Thanks to Thom, Greg, Jamie and Anneke for the kind words and stopping by.

Gene and his wife, Florence stopped by today for their first look. They loved what they saw. It means a lot when you get great feedback from your subject! Here is today's work. I did detail his vest and shirt. I roughed in his gun belt and his beautiful belt buckle. The detail on the belt buckle is fantastic! It is a collector's item. It is a "Wyoming Centennial" belt buckle. It is a little hard to see but it has a beautiful covered wagon on it. It is trimmed in gold, silver and copper. You can also see I started painting Gene's saddle. That should all be a "done deal" tomorrow along with his chaps, jeans and his "Ruger Vaqero" Colt .45.

BTW, Pete Miller has been real diligent about loading my "work progresses" on my website. If you care to go there, my .jpgs are bigger and you see a little better.

Hi Minerva! Good to see you posting again.

Here is the forth day in. One or two more days and it will be a "wrap." I pretty much got done what I said, plus his left gloved hand.

As I was painting today, I realized that I am in the painting. I was painting the big chrome snap on Gene's chaps and I noticed that I was clearly reflected there. It's funny, I just paint what I see.

Later!!--Denny ;{

I am curious to know more about the dynamics of your composition, Denny. First, why did you choose to render this painting with more positive space than negative? Second, why did you choose to portray your subject from just below the waist up? and why did you choose to photograph his garb with such dark imposing colors?

Jerrie Glasper 11 Apr 2008

Also, Denny, what more will you share with us more about your thought processes in your own words and point out to us the key elements that go through your mind when you envision the end product? In other words, what makes this painting/composition tick?
