Any ideas???

Hi everyone...I'm new to the groups section but I was excited to see a group on children's book illustrators! I'm really interested in this area and have ideas ready for illustration but haven't a clue where to start in the process of getting from idea to publication. Do you have any ideas for me as far as getting my foot in the door for something like this? It seems a little daunting to me, especially when you have no contacts or sponsors to give you a leg up....

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!!! Amy T.

I know that feeling! I've been looking into self publishing too but economic times being what they are, that might not happen too soon!!! LOL

I guess it's the "getting the foot in the door" aspect that I'm concerned about. I'm ready to move on the first book but not sure what to do next. I'm reading up on it all but welcome any and all suggestions!

Any sure-fire plans/strategies for selling to a publisher???

Nothing is sure fire.

I would say start by joining SCBWI, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. LOTS of great resources.

You can also start a children's illustrators group; either online of with people near by.

If you don’t know how to find people or a meeting you can go to MeetUp.com and set up local meetings in your area.

Another good thing to do is buy a book titled, Writing with Pictures by Uri Shulevitz. It's kind of outdated when it comes to the reproduction process, but it has great information on how to create a book dummy and everything you need to know about creating a book.

Find a writer, offer your skills for free (or minimum charge) so that you have something to show people... then you look for better paid opportunities.... I can see how some people may disagree with me.. but that's what I am doing. :P
