MFA, Painting, 1989 - BFA, Painting, 1986 Colorado State University

My work suggests that within the physicality of art, emphasized through the nonverbal sensual plane of mark making, color, and surface, lies the origins of sociopolitical transformation; painting as being is always at odds and in opposition to ideological structures of thought. The narrational thematic premise is how power and domination is far more internal than external, the predominate tacit acceptance of such, and complicity in the manufacture and maintenance of institututional power. My work also suggests that the physicality of being is represented by the physicality of painting, through its concomitant mystery, incompleteness, and uncanniness; such unconceals the one-dimensional character of contemporary society and the tendency to acquiescence dominate ideologies. Ideology, through its very nature, cloaks the conundrum of being - an essential of/to dissent.
