Self Portrait

The sharp contrast between organic and man-made, light and reflection has always fascinated me. Shapes created as light passes through a glass bottle or shadows that fall behind. Where does one end and the other begin. I spend the greatest amount of time creating a background on canvas with dyes and sometimes layers of tile cement, emulsion paint and linseed oil onto which the simplest of images are placed. Sometimes working with pen, other time with pastels, pencil, watercolour, or charcoal. I am continually working on new techniques and effects of one media on another. I am never quite certain how things will evolve, some levels will not be apparent in the final painting, and others will be so subtle they are hardly noticable at all, but they exist like layers of history.
