This painting, called “Bark and Bite” was supposed to be done later, while I do the complicated architectural piece, but I couldn’t wait. I experimented with speckling, a technique where paint is dripped or slung onto the artwork with a stiff paintbrush or toothbrush. After I painted a base color, I used a toothbrush to splatter five layers of colors onto the artwork. This created an interesting pitted texture, perfect for tree bark. I added defining shadows and highlights to complete the artwork in two hours. Look closely and you’ll see why I called it “Bark and Bite.” Now I need to summon the courage to start that architectural painting… This painting is for sale.
