Narwhals are among the least understood of all the whale species. They live in the arctic (from Canada to Russia) and shy away from humans. These whales have a tusk, like that of an elephant, emerging from their upper left jaw. Nearly all males have one, a rare individual will have two, and most females have none. They have lost their dorsal fin to a dorsal ridge, possibly an adaptation to their icy environment. Drawn in black and white charcoal on blue matboard, 2009.
