Rhali, At One in his World

Oil on canvas 30 x 40”/ 76 x102 cm Rhali was our Touareg guide when we were trekking in the Algerian Sahara. He reminded me of some of my Inuit friends and guides who, like Rhali are completely in tune with themselves and nature. I often walked directly behind him a because I know that one can learn a great deal about the land and how to move on it by mimicking how indigineous people walk. I saw that he never varied the length of his stride no matter the terrain; if there was a boulder mid stride, he stepped on it without ever once changing his step to accommodate obstacles. it was a most efficient way of walking and saved a good deal of energy, for which I was grateful.
