Cancer and the Czech Dancers (2008)

I am a healthcare provider, who happens to be the dance instructor for a folk dance group from a Czech-American community. Two of my dancers are women of Czech descent, who grew up together and shared a passion for folk dancing. Because there are always fewer men than women in such groups, they often danced together. One of the two friends developed breast cancer, which eventually took her life after a long courageous battle. Her friend, out of solidarity, shaved her head during the period of chemotherapy. They were both proud to wear their ethnic costumes despite the incongruous juxtaposition of their bald heads and their flowing skits. Cancer could not and did not defeat their friendship, their pride in their community or their passion for dance. To them both na zdraví (to health)!
