It has been many years since I have seen a killdeer. I remember hearing their distinctive call as a child and loving how brightly they stood out against a summer field. I saw this one a couple of weeks ago at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. It is a sign of the state of our planet that so many of the birds that used to be common are now so rare that it is a thrill to see them..
