Wild Tulips of Laconia

Just outside a village in Laconia called, Didima, on the way to Spetses island, a field of unknown origin blooms for only 10 days a year, early in the Spring. If you are lucky, you will find these amazing wild tulips in their full glory. Since the tulip originated from Turkey, perhaps these vast fields, existing only in this one spot on the mainland of Greece, were planted years ago by a Turkish farmer. Yet, today, no one in the area seems to know how the tulips got there. The flowers grow short above the hard red clay ground, but when the sturdy stems are carefully pulled, long stems emerge from beneath the surface. We tried digging to find the bulbs, but even just after a steady rain, and the earth was soft, we were unable to find the deeply hidden bulbs. Simply amazing.
