Sara-Homage to Lempicka

This is a copy i did of a painting i found in an old theatre. Done in oil on 16"x21" canvas. I attended a wedding at The Mounds Theatre on the East Side of St. Paul. The theatre was very popular in the 1920's. This painting was hanging on the wall. there was more to the painting i only painted the area i liked. I have no idea who the original artist is or who this woman is. Everytime i worked on this painting, i wondered who she was. A friend of mine, Sara, suggested i add a tear, hence the name Sara-Homage to an Unknown Artist.... After some research i found who originaly painted this. It is by Tamara De Lempicka. The title is La Dormeuse(the sleeper). The original is much better, of course. I realized i painted a copy of a copy. Interesting. I loved the style which is why i painted it. This has been said about her work--Her distinctive and bold artistic style developed quickly (influenced by what Lhote sometimes referred to as "soft cubism" and by Denis' "synthetic cubism") and epitomized the cool yet sensual side of the Art Deco movement. For her, Picasso "embodied the novelty of destruction".[2] She thought that many of the Impressionists drew badly and employed "dirty" colors. De Lempicka technique would be novel, clean, precise, and elegant. NFS
