Wood burning is still done on a much smaller scale. That sign was not painted but purned into the wood. Weathering will cause the burned areas to become lighter in spots after a while. The recesses will remain and a small paint brush or leather strip with lamp black can be used to redarken the wood.
Artist Reply: you are a wealth of information, Stanley...I did think possibly that wood burning was used but knew nothing about the lamp black, that makes sense for the time period
