Reborn

I love the smooth shiny surface of the tree when it sheds its bark letting it start life afresh. Wish we could do the same!

This is a very imaginative drawing that sets a mysterious mood, a great illustration for classic fairy tales where the princess gets lost in the woods. I take many photos of tree bark and when the bark is unpeeled, so many images are revealed like spirits hiding inside the protection that emerge when the old is peeled away to reveal new life that is illustrated in the bark that I call bark art since the images are so unique. I adore the surreal imagery of this stunning work. It would be great if we could also unpeel like trees to start fresh. Of course there are chemical peels, but I would rather use nature as a psychological metaphor that when layers are unraveled that so much can be revealed behind the veneer of our everyday persona. Sometimes we have to present ourselves with "masks' and what a relief it is to be able to unpeel our layers to expose our real selves. It is like an onion, the unpeeling towards the core evokes tears that can be very revealing in the way dreams are the royal road to the unsconscious. I use the term barkart since trees in nature have so much imagery that it often is quite a surprise. We are limited in terms of unpeeling physically, but as we grow older the process of uncovering can have profound

Artist Reply: Thank you for such an inspiring comment Julie. I took quite a few photos that day of the unveiling of the fresh shiny trees, often with striking colours- lime greens next to strong rust reds! I have always worried though, if we peel off the layers of our persona, the created identities, that we might be devestated to find there is nothing there! When people talk about "finding themselves" it makes me feel a bit shivery. How much of our lives is created to fit the demand!
