Going or Coming

(c)Michelle Hunter ** Being in the company of someone where you feel the two of you are in the center of the universe** I was asking friends for painting ideas. There were a fair amount of suggestions but nothing really seemed interesting enough for me to spend time creating it. However, there was an idea friend had given me. This friend has an appreciation for French art and architecture. He suggested that I paint a couple with a French street going off into the horizon. Though I like paintings with a lot of detail where it feels like you're physically there-I don't have the patience to create such a scene. Therefore, I simplified his idea. Instead of dealing with choosing facial features, clothing, and expressions-I painted them in silhouette. Instead of painting a French street in the background-there isn't a background. I wanted to place them somewhere so they are near the corner of a sidewalk. After some back and forth on placing an apartment building or NYC subway entrance at the corner I chose the subway entrance (simpler). That piece is very important to the painting because you can't tell if one or both are "Going or Coming." I don't even have an answer to that, so it is what you want to believe. As for the colors, I wanted to keep it clean and simple. I didn't want the painting to end up as a very detailed piece with a lot of blending. That would take away from the emotion-being in the company of someone where you feel the two of you are in the center of the universe. The circles in the background represent planets and stars. To me, they don't seem static but that they are approaching the couple. That wasn't my intention but it is interesting that it appears that way to me. The title came to me long after I finished it. Until that point, it was called "Untitled-Street Scene." What comes to mind when you look at it?
