This was my first really big serious digital painting project. Ordinarily, I don't do backgrounds (save for maybe a general portait-like wash of colour), so that's one big thing here. Another is that I normally begin with a hand-drawn and scanned sketch with details well planned out. This was sketched in PhotoShop in a very large and loose way, then painted in PhotoShop (with many layers, and really frickin' huge), where the details were worked out as I went. I'm happy with everything but the grass--it's too "hairy" looking. I'll probably revisit this later and try to fix the hairy grass problem. Severely shrunk from the original, which is 3300 x 4200 pixels.

This was actually done while following the Digital Realism tutorial on the tutorials page of Ursula Vernon's website, Metal and Magic. She still hasn't finished part two, which deals with painting the subject, but I just couldn't wait, so I went ahead and painted her anyway. :-) By the way, visit Ursula's website--she's incredibly amazing!

September 2002; Sketched and painted in PhotoShop.
