Art depicting mermaids often portrays these faeries of the water as playful creatures looking on as ships capsize with treasures of jewels and bounty they rescue from the deep to put in their long, wavy hair or wear around their necks. Hoping to enrapture the mortal men of their fantasies and one day trade fins and tails for legs to become the princesses they dream they can be. The myths and images that go with them don't feature a mermaid like yours with a face filled with longing and sadness who is covering up her torso as though she's shy. Such a lovely and magical creature, but pensive and private. Not the "usual mermaid," but that is not a surprise in the artwork I've admired by Michelle St. Clair. It's a rare and glorious thing to find an artist whose images and archetypes are those that have an individual and intimate flair. Never what you'd expect to find. Always drawing you into the soul she paints or sketchs through otherworldly eyes. Your someone with talent and a special compassion and empathy for the beautiful, magical, mysterious fantasy creatures you bring out of your visions for us to revel in. Thank you for bringing such magic to my life and others! Heather Emelin Muse xo
