Dineh's Daughter

Dinehs Daughter oil, 10 by 8 inches on archival canvas panel, was finished January 5, 2005. It is the tenth painting in my series titled Unforgettable. This little girl epitomizes the beauty of the Navajo people in a most remarkable and wondrous environment. Her gentle smile and delicate features serve as a perfect foil to the awesome, but often stark, grandeur of Monument Vally. When this little girl posed in 1959, the coins, sewn on to her blouse, were sometimes removed and traded for goods at the trading posts. Today, these blouses are highly prized and worth considerably more than the face amount of the coins attached. My father did a rendition of this little girl, which was purchased by actor Sean McClory, who acted with dad in several movies, as well as in The Quiet Man with John Wayne. Titled Daughter of the Dineh, it was later reproduced as a fine art lithograph. When my father titled his painting, people were familiar with the Navajo, but few outsiders had ever heard or seen the word they used for themselves, which is Diné. It means The People, and serves as a reminder that the Navajos constitute a society in which each individual has a strong sense of belonging with others who speak the same language. Ever thoughtful and respectful, I suspect dad added the h to the end of Diné for a phonetic spelling, to avoid embarrassing people who might mispronounce it. In deference to him, so did I. © 2005 John Watt artist retains all rights to any reproductions of this original art.
