For most of my adult life I was a scientist. My undergraduate biology degree led to a Ph.D. in physiology and cell biology. I spent two years as a postdoctoral student working with animal cancer models and then five years as a research scientist in the field of human breast cancer. After leaving research, I spent 31 years as a university biology professor helping students learn about and appreciate the complexities of the human body. Both research and teaching require creativity in approaching problems. When I retired from my career in science, art became my second career and the outlet for my creativity. For me these two careers have been a perfect balance. This colored pencil painting symbolizes this and was based on a still life scene I created and photographed. This painting is based on that photograph and is done on Grafix drafting film using Farber-Castell Polychromos pencils. The size of the artwork is 16 X 20 inches.
