Clamdiggers In The Fog

"In various positions required for optimal success, these 'clamdiggers in the fog' go about their quest for the elusive siliqua patula."

Artist comment: "With soft pastel on textured Canson Mi-Teintes paper, I sketched a familiar scene. I am an avid clam digger, seeking with enthusiasm the Northwest coastal razor clam. And with equal enthusasm, I take those memories home to my studio and paint them. In this scenerio, I began with a grey toned paper and a soft pastel pencil to create a pleasing composition. I wanted to reproduce the visual horizontal triangle established by the placement of the figures. The strongest (and therefore most commanding) figure is clad with a brightly colored vest to assure the viewable image is what catches the eye and draws the viewer 'into' the picture. Then I concentrated on the secondary groupings. Finally with a medium grey, I placed the far background 'clammers' in believable positions. Finally I 'streaked' the wet sand, and reflections."
