©2013 Alex Preiss In a televised speech to parliament in June 2012, Bashar Assad likened his crackdown on Syrian opposition to a doctor trying to save a patient. “When a surgeon… cuts and cleans and amputates, and the wound bleeds, do we say to him, `Your hands are stained with blood?’” Assad said. “Or do we thank him for saving the patient?”
