Umpqua River Lighthouse

"Nineteen miles north of Coos Bay, Oregon, the conical shaped Umpqua River Lighthouse shines it's red and white flashing beacon 165 feet above the sea. Neither storms, fog, nor pirates have successfully extinguished her light; shining through a first order lens since 1894."

Artist comment: "I am quite fond of lighthouses, and am fortunate to have chosen the Pacific Northwest as my permanent residence. We have a plethora of grand lighthouses, of which I have painted nearly all. This one is readily accessible to view (the grounds, however, are off limits). It is the Umpqua River Lighthouse guiding marine traffic of all types with her steady light. This oil on canvas is my homage to her. I painted the scene on a brightly overcast day with no discernable shadows. I started with a sketch, using a grey toned mixture, briefly indicating the forms of trees and tower, outbuildings, and road. I painted the background and foreground, then the building on the right. Next I did the left building, saving the 'best' for last. I meticulously rendered the detail of the light and finished with the tower railing."
