North Head In The Fog

"Because of a dramatic increase in the number of shipwrecks along the Long Beach, Washington Peninsula, this sixty-five foot sentinel was erected in 1898 as a companion to the beacon at Cape Disappointment. It bears an automated aero-marine lamp. The area is a favorite of fishermen and tourists the year round."

Artist comment: "Most of my lighthouse paintings depict a sunny day and bright colors. Here I chose to paint the lighthouse on a foggy day with the light piercing the gloom to bring comfort and safety to mariners far out at sea. I started with a sketch of the scene and painted the background, taking care to leave the tower and small building clear. I next rendered the grounds and parking area, finishing with the lighthouse itself and the fence. The beacon shining into the gloom was my final touch. The small oil on canvas is one in a series of coastal Pacific Northwest lites."
