Bandon Lighthouse

"The Coquille river in Bandon in South Central Oregon, is the site of this small, uniquely shaped lighthouse. Before being abondoned by the Coast Guard in 1939, the lighthouse served both as a seacoast beacon and harbor entrance at what some pilots and navigators consider Oregon's most dangerous bar."

Artist comment: "A bright overcast day is the mood of this painting of an unusual little lighthouse. The light, like most beacons today, is automated, and the interior of the building has been turned into a museum of marine-related memorabilia. I chose to depict the scene in quiet tones to show the loneliness of the location on the banks of the Coquille River on the Oregon coast. My challenge was to depict the grays and yet have enough filtered sunlight. With oil on canvas, I first sketched the composition, then painted the sky, grass, and foreground water. After painting the buildings, I finished with the windows and the lens in the tower."
