The jungle series is a body of wood batik paintings I've created thruout the 90's when I predominantly was working & living in East Java, Indonesia where I own ( & still does) a small home industry batik workshop. These images were a constant inspiration for me as it is my almost everyday living surroundings as well. I have created numerous wood batik paintings with this subject matter & sold them there. The few that I have displayed here are remnants of that bodywork which I brought with me to the States in the late 90's. This particular subject matters works so well with the batik on wood approach where the tropical foliage (particularly the banana tree) sets in perfectly with the natural wood grains of the wood canvas. Symbolically it also conveys visually the interplay of life (the young & green foliage)& death (the decaying of the foliage).
