Beach Buddies

"These juvenile pelicans stand shoulder to shoulder, two ‘beach buddies’ trying to decide what to do next."

Artist Comments: "Pelicans are fascinating birds. One day on the beach at Seaview, Washington, a flock of these large birds stood at the edge of the sea. Two young ones in particular stood out of the crowd due to the ‘closeness’ of their interaction. Were they preening each other? Were they conversing in pelican talk? I took a series of photographs to use as reference later in my studio. I chose pastel to depict the softness of their feathers and for the ability to blend the greys and browns to get just the right shade of ‘pelican’ brown. I painted a cool blue background to contrast the warmth of the birds. The sunlight on the warm sand was rendered in a combination of lavender and cream. I had fun doing their bills and alert eyes. All the while a poem by D. L. Merritt was going through my head ...... ‘his mouth can hold more than his belly can’...."
