This is another rock art panel originally incised or pecked into a rock ledge along the Columbia River that borders Oregon and Washington. Before the construction of a dam in the 1950's in this area, a large set of rapids was used by the local peoples to fish for salmon. The rapids and slippery rocks along the river were very dangerous, and many people fell and were swept to their deaths. The "being" painted in this panel is called People Eater, the beast who lived in the river and ate the people who were swept away. Image copyright Cher Peterson. All rights reserved.
