Artist comment: "This is what makes clam digging scenes such a joy for me to paint. Here is the sequence played out as I actually observe it. The dance goes like this; you step forcefully on the sand to get the clam to ‘show’, then you stop when you see the clam ‘spout’, then you stoop to dig it out, then you drop the sand (with clam) on the beach, and then you kick the pile of sand apart to reveal the critter within. I painted this pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes textured grey-toned paper. The extent of grey was accomplished with two different colors of grey and a third one slightly darker for the distant dunes. Each of the people appear in the clothing I saw. The red adds a nice bright touch to the otherwise somber scene and the boy with green on his sleeve is definately going his own way."
