Frangipani Siapo

Recently I travelled home to New Zealand to meet my father who is Samoan/Hawaiian. This was the first time we have met after 43 years. I needed to connect with my cultural identity as well,s this has been something i have dreamed of for many years. This piece is based on the tradtional Tapa cloth designs of Samoa known as "Siapo", this is my contemporary version which I have named Frangipani Siapo, as some of the elements used were derived from this tropical flower. My thoughts are also with family who may be facing the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami early today.
