I Am A Tuareg

This is part of a body of work I created at an artist colony in Nebraska after living in Morocco. The works are my attempt to comprehend some of my experiences there and integrate them into my world and life view. This painting is a spoof exploring tourism in Morocco and how all the streetside sellers would claim Tuareg heritage (the famous blue men nomads of the Sahara) in order to sell more products at higher prices. It is so funny because often the hawkers actual heritage is just as fascinating, but less sexy because Tuaregs happen to have a great international marketing campaign. On the one hand this deceit is immoral. On the other hand, it works. All of my works contain imperfections; it is my way of building intimacy between the viewer and my self - a sort of inside joke as well as a reminder that these works are created by a fallible human being.
