I created this
Whistler-Klimt
OIL/COLLAGE in the
"Paint like the
Masters" Class
which I take at
the
Academy where I also teach.
The meaning of this class is not to copy, but
to understand how the artist
worked and how to change it into your own.
Quite a challenge!
__________
"Blue and Violet: La Belle de
Jour" (1885) by Whistler
is an
oil on canvas of a female in a veiled
see-through negligee.
I used Klim't s gold and the lightened skin of
his
portrayed females.
__________
James Abbott McNeill Whistler's
(1834-
1903) deft brushwork and mighty ego made
him one of London's best-known painters in the
second half of the 1800s.
He developed
important
close relationships with many
women,and the different looks and
poses he gave them reveal much
about the changing roles of women
in the late 19th century.
Gustav Klimt (1862 –
1918) Viennese painter, was
the founder of the Vienna
Secession, the Austrian art
nouveau movement.
Klimt's
primary subject was the female
body and his works are marked by
a frank eroticism.
The gold in
Klimt's paintings is gold leaf, rather
than the iridescent paints
available today.
I added a piece of gold cloth (left under) in her robe, and some gold leaf in the background (with a gold leaf marker), and made her face (under her head) of newspaper. I also used super gloss gel for the gold look background (upper right).
__________
Materials used:
Chinese and
Dutch News paper, oil paint,
Matte Medium (my archival glue)
heavy gloss gel,
Gold Leaf
Marker/sheet, cheese cloth.
