Long Ears

I was looking at the portfolio of Reynaldo Villarreal yesterday, when I saw a wooden sculpture next to his beautiful paintings. About 35 years ago I made this wooden sculpture (about 12 inch high). It's a long time ago and not a great piece of art, but I thought it would be nice to show it here on AW. My fathers hobby was making wooden sculptures. He has made dozens of them, mostly with a christian or indonesian subject. He had all the tools, so I thought then I'd give it a try. He had a book about Easter Island with photos of wooden sculptures of the "long ears". There were 2 photos (a profile and a front view) of this sculpture. So the challenge for me was: can I make a sculpture from 2 photos out of a piece of wood? I remember it took me 5 days to complete and that my father liked it! I have never made any wooden sculpture since, but who knows I will in the future....

One of the references, not the original but a look alike

Evidently nothing is beyond you, this would be impossible for most people to create, and it is quite good, I also think boredome is never going to be a problem for you, yes a gifted man indeed!!!

Artist Reply: Thank you so much for all the kind words and comments on my modest work! I think that wood sculpting is "underestimated". That's why I admire my father so much for his beautiful wooden sculptures. I think that I have to wait another 3 years (I will be 65 then) to become more productive. Thanks a lot!

This is a great sculpture, a great piece of art!

Artist Reply: THANKS, Hannah, for both the comments on this sculpture and the pencil drawing of my daughter! It is much appreciated! Thanks!

To be the first time to work on this sculpture, you did an amazing job. I think you should pursue it, you have an amazing talent, the pencil and the sculpture work.

Artist Reply: Thank you so much, Teresa, for the nice and encouraging words! Wish I had more spare time..... Thanks!

Wow,you are so talented!

Artist Reply: Hi, Renata! I don't feel talented myself, when I look at so many great artists here on AW. I do have one strong point, though: Patience! THANKS for your support!

Artist Reply: Reuze bedankt, Nelly! Ik vind de "Phoenix" echt schitterend, vooral door de kleurenkeuze! De opmerking "in kleur" komt van mijn zoontje van 9. Een hele fijne zondag!

For the only effort in wood sculpting I think you did a great job.

Artist Reply: Thanks a lot, RQ! Your wood sculptures are very creative with "Joe's Condo" as my favourite! Makes me want to start with wood sculpturing again! I am working on my 2nd graphite pencil portrait right now and already bought a set of 132 colored pencils to try a new medium next. Thanks!

It takes some doing, making a 3 dimensional figure from a 2 dimensional reference, and you have done a fantastic job. It must have been really enjoyable to do aswell. I have always wanted to try sculpturing and just like you, I may do in the future. Wonderful details to it, lovely work:)

Artist Reply: Hi, Joanne! Yes, I remember (my memory is not too bad, yet) that I really had fun doing it. I worked on it for 5 days from early morning till late in the evening (I was young then!). If I do a wood sculpture in the future, I am thinking of a female nude. THANKS! btw I don't think AW will censur these images, or will they???

Anneke Hut 31 Mar 2009
