Bog Trees

Acrylic over oil pastel on water colour paper. 10 x 14 inches. I actually painted this in 2005 but have been forbidden by my son from ever selling it....In a bog pool near Louisburgh in Co. Mayo Ireland are the blackened tree stumps of The Bog Trees. Not much to look at maybe, but these remains of trees are 5000 years old. Just think of the history they've witnessed from the earliest settlers through dawn of Christianity, the hundreds of years of conflict with the English, the Great Famine, the birth of a nation and the roar of the Celtic Tiger.......then perhaps you'll see why I found them so inspirational. I'd really appreciate any feedback on these as it is so different from any of my other work before or since!

Lovely use of colors, I can see why he forbids the sale of it. Very nice....or is he actually waiting to sell it for his inheritance maybe??? lol. Lovely painting indeed.

Artist Reply: I never thought of that, but if the poor lad thinks he'll make his fortune, he may be disappointed.............I'm glad you like it though, its very special to me and I will frame it and hang it someday :o))

Fascinating the history of these bogs - I like the colors - very interesting piece of art!

Artist Reply: Thankyou MJ...........to many, the peat bogs of Ireland may seem desolate places, but they hold all sorts of history and secrets :o))

Jacki, what a great way to put over a point,...almost like fingerpainting, but the storey makes it all that much more special...almost ghostly! Great work, listen to your son! Its a keeper!

Sandra McClure 10 Jun 2008

The bogs in Ireland fascinated me. Really expressive work Jacki.

Artist Reply: Thanks a million, Sandra.......................glad you share my fascination..........to many, the peat bogs are desolate places but theres such history in them, much of it buried..........Another of my paintings "Ceide" is of an amazing location where a man digging his turf unearthed a complete settlement entirely by chance.........

Loredana 10 Jun 2008

WOW I love the colors in this wonderful work

Artist Reply: Thankyou Loredana....what I wanted to do was kind of encapsulate the idea of 5000 years of sunrises and sunsets with the trees as a constant factor throughout

Barry Huyett 10 Jun 2008

Artist Reply: Thankyou Barry.......from someone whose abstract work is as good as your is, that really is a great compliment :o))
