I like how this painting tells a story. What tasks are they performing?

Artist Reply: Thank you frances.This was a typical wash day scene in the north of England circa 1940S.It depicts the mother using the poss tub usually made of galvanised steel or tin to get the clothes clean, and the child is ready to help using the old wringer to remove any excess water from the clothes.As a child i once got my fingers caught in the rollers of the old mangle.It did hurt,have just about forgiven my big sister 50 years later
