I hate being misquoted. I didn't say it wasn't art. I said there's not much point in just copying a photo. I.e. it doesn't have much validity. It is a diluted and [by definition] unoriginal statement. One of my teachers explained it to me; the photographer has simplified the image by reducing it to 2 dimensions before you start. What you should be doing [as all of us should be doing] is constantly challenging yourself. Always reaching for that next level. Identifying your comfort zone, and deliberately stepping outside it. That means drawing from life, being spontaneous, using different media/ grounds etc. I suggest you try life drawing. It promotes spontenaity fluency and observation. I'm sure you will find it empowering. Just a suggestion.

Not a 'photocopy', but if it's not a copy of a photograph, what is it? The 'art' is in the photography. In fact, it could be seen as an infringement of intelectual property rights to copy it without the photographer's approval. i know that's academic if it's not for sale, but...can you copyright your copy of someone else's image? It's all the same to me what you draw, but it's a bit much to post images asking for appraisal, then taking offence at the slightest hint of negative feedback. When I'm happy with a piece of work, I don't need a second opinion, and when I'm not happy with it, I don't want anyone else to see it.

Artist Reply: Yes, I agree, the art is in the photography, which makes it an honour to draw. Quite a few photographers on this site have said they would be honoured if I drew one of their photos. Art doesn't have to stop at the initial picture. If that were so, then, the painting of a bowl of fruit that a still life artist paints, wouldn't be what you call art, it would be the arrangement of fruit they were looking at, wouldn't it ? I still urge you to join AW and post some stuff of yours, then I would know what you actually class as art. Art wanted is a friendly artist community, and yes, we accept negative feedback, but, when someone says my art isn't art, then, I can't just sit back and do nothing, especially when that person doesn't show us any of their work. And, just for the record, I never ASKED anyone for appraisal, Just constructive feedback. I cannot see how you are being constructive to my work.... what is it you think I should be doing then ??????

Is that a copy of one of Leni Riefenstahl's photographs?

Artist Reply: No, it is not. Photograph used for this portrait was taken by Jodi Cobb. And, if you insist on calling it a copy, well, perhaps you could reword... it is not a photocopy, it is a 'drawing' of the photograph. Again, I urge you to show us some of your art.

it takes a good eye and skill to re-create a picture,and i think you have done this well, keep up the good work!!!
