GIANT CHINESE PANDA FEASTING ON BAMBOO

GIANT CHINESE PANDA EATING BAMBOO paintography and photography by MICHAEL (Miguel) FORBUS.... Giant Panda Contributed by: Madison Paige Jones on 8/14/2007 Wandering around a bamboo forest. The mother panda finds a hollow tree hidden beneath the foliage. The perfect place to have her baby. She is ready to have her cub. Giant Panda is born, helpless and hairless. Not sure what to do next. Giant Panda waits for her mother milk. She looks like she is growing. Black spots are appearing around her eyes. The mother looks upon her with pride. Knowing that it's her baby, she looks out for it. Watching everywhere for signs of danger. Now Giant Panda can eat real food. Bamboo replaces the mother's milk. Leaves and flowers are the occasional treat. If Giant Panda is lucky she can have a mouse. Hair covers Giant Panda. She almost has as much as her mother. Almost. Giant Panda could pass for a grown panda. Giant Panda has made a friend, Chiao. They play together hour after hour. Enjoying every moment and every game. The fun doesn't end, until it is time to go. One day Chiao doesn't come out to play. Giant Panda goes to her home. Poachers surround Chiao's cave. Not knowing what to do next she runs home. Play time is over. The time has come to leave. Giant Panda is now one and a half years old. Her mother says goodbye with a lick on the cheek. Tears well up in both pairs of eyes as Giant Panda departs. While walking, she realizes she is the same size as her mother. Giant Panda is fully grown but not ready to mate. She slows her pace. The ground here is nice. Nice enough for a home. Giant Panda has found her territory. Quickly, she marks it to let everyone else know. She will do her best to make it her home. So that she feels safe and secure. Time has gone by and Giant Panda is five now. She looks for a mate because spring is the time.

Michael WWF need images like this to inspire us all to care about wild life & by that I mean our natural enviroment & all its dependands not wild disco's & stuff. Just in case anyone out there was a little unsure. Save them & we'll save ourselves.

Artist Reply: Robin, you sure have that right. As a long time animal activist, I have been happy to see that they have been able to assist in the procreation and raising of these animals, although in captivity it is much better then not. The animals are afforded a much better and safer life. The bamboo they thrive on is become more scarce in the wild and they have a program that will allow you to bring and donate not pesticide assisted bamboo to the Atlanta Zoo where they have this program. They also have a M-Fri. Panda web cam at the Atlanta zoo that you can tune into and watch them. Some folks I know thrive on that and leave it on as a screen saver. I will try and post the URL. I do think it is in Atlanta but I will check. Thanks for your kind reverent words towards these peaceful critters. Have a glorious weekend. Michael

Thank God for the Wolong Nature Preserve, in China, to help these sweet, innocent creatures stay as protected as possible. So few left in the wild-sad. Roly-poly "clowns" as they munch, munch, munch on their beloved bamboo...we only love them more... AO

Artist Reply: Luckily there are many who work at keeping their lineage alive. Dedicated caretakers who take them in like family. Thanks for your vivid observations. I really appreciate it. Michael

Emily Reed 10 Nov 2007

Lior Goldenberg 10 Nov 2007

Beautiful animal and beautiful work, Michael! She looks a bit sad but she probably isn't, as I understood from your lovely story.

Artist Reply: There is a fable that tells how they go their markings. They were watching a shepherdess guard her flock and a tiger came to prey upon them and though they tried to distract the tiger from the shepherdess and her flock, the were unable to save the life of the young girl. So in mourning they rubbed their bodies with ashes thus coloring their white fur with black in certain areas and then in finality they were rubbing the tears from their eyes and thus the coloring that always seems to make them sad. Truthfully in their earthly lives that are happy and carefree, rather nomadic to collect the large amounts of bamboo they consume, and are very happy and frolic about without fear. So their lives are only compounded and fear created by the only enemy they have, humans. Thanks so much for your kind and generous remarks. I always appreciate your comments. Michael

Joanna Jungjohann 10 Nov 2007

Fiona Hooper 10 Nov 2007

I wish everyone could feel the same way about these wonderful animals. Thank you, Miguel.

Artist Reply: Fiona, these are wonderful gentle animals and have no malice for other animals, vegans, and love their babies like we do and are just all about frolicking and having fun. What is the harm in that. Great and beautiful animals. Thanks for your observations and kind and generous statement. Michael

Sweet beings and they are so adorable as you have shown here, Michael. Hurts my heart about the parts in the story where Chiao is no more and where Mama and Baby need to part. Hopefully, with her mating, gentle new cubs will survive and be left alone to do what they do best: Make our world more beautiful and wondrous and tickle our fancies by being so incredibly cute, cuddly looking and irresistable! P.S. We can learn a lot from Giant Pandas and Sea Otters about how to look so darned cute while eating! ~*~ AO

Artist Reply: Anon, thanks so much for writing back and the writer of the poem had the same feelings I did for the family so she said it as well as I could. Love the story and the true lives of the families of Pandas are not as easy as one might think. Bless them and wish them well. They seem like they do not live in fear as some animals do although they are hunted. Thanks so much for your kind comments and observations. Michael

Lili Segal 10 Nov 2007

Artist Reply: My gratitude to yo Lili for the kindness you write. It is great to hear other people being attracted to this kind and beautiful wild animal. In doing the painting, I read much about the habits and habitat and natural selection that goes on in their lives. Very interesting animals. Thanks so much for your generous comments and compliments. I really appreciate it. Michael
