HUMPBACK WHALE MAKING HER LAST DIVE

MIGRATING HUMPBACK AS SHE MAKES ONE LAST LEAP TO THE SUN paintography by miguel SHE MAKES ONE LAST LEAP FOR BREATH AS THE HARPOON DUG DEEPER IN HER SIDE PIERCING HER LUNG AND SHE FRANTICALLY LOOKED AROUND FOR HER CALF AND CAUGHT HER EYE AND THE MADE THE DEEP SOUND OF AGONY AND DANGER, SHE WAS TELLING THE CALF TO FOLLOW THE POD, AS SHE SLOWLY DROWNED, TAKEN BY THE EXPLOSIVE HARPOON, ANOTHER ONE DOWN. SHE DOVE UNDER TRYING TO SHAKE THE PAIN FROM HER FLANK, BUT IT WAS EMBEDDED AND SHE BEGAN TO LOSE HER GRIP ON LIFE. SHE REMEMBERED HER MOTHER AND THE STORIES OF THE WHALERS WHO WERE HEARTLESS AND HAD NO SORROW OF THE DEATH OF A MATRIARCH AS MAGNIFICENT AS SHE. THERE WAS A LARGE LAYER OF BLUBBER FOR THE TRIP TO MEXICO AND THE ABUNDANT KRILL THAT THEY ENJOYED IN THE INLET OF MENDOCINO AND NORTH. THEY WERE A HAPPY POD AND SANG TO EACH OTHER AS THEY MADE THEIR WAY TO THE BAJA. THEY HAS PLENTY OF BOUNTY TO ENJOY ON THE WAY DOWN AND THEY MISSED THE WHALER BY A FEW MINUTES. THERE WERE MOMENTS THAT SHE RECALLED AS SHE DROWNED IN HER OWN BLOOD, SHE THOUGHT OF HER LOVELY CALVES AND HER NEW BABY, THAT WOULD NOW BE RAISED BY ANOTHER COW. THE WHALERS DID NOT KNOW THAT THE MOURNED THEIR DEAD AND IT WASN'T OFTEN THAT THEY HAD TO. IT WAS A FREE WORLD AS THEY SWAM AND DANGER WAS NOT REMEMBERED. THE DEADLY WHALERS WERE SCARCE AND THE LAWS WERE SAVING THIS MAGNIFICENT AND ANCIENT BREED. THE HUMPBACK SANG A LOVELY SONG AND COULD EVEN COMMUNICATE WITH THE KIND HUMANS WHO LOVED THEM. AND THEY KNEW WHO THEY WERE AND WHO ONLY CARED FOR THE AMBERGRIS AND THE OIL OF THEIR FLESH. THEY KNEW THAT THE INTUIT TRIBE RELIED ON THEM BUT ONLY TOOK THE OLD AND FEEBLE AND THEY SACRIFICED THEMSELVES TO THE TRIBE TO SAVE THEM FROM STARVATION AND THEY KNEW WHO IT WAS TO BE BEFORE THEY SWAM TO THE SOUTH AND WARM WATERS AND FAT TUNA. NO MORE SIFTING FOR KRILL AND HUGE SCHOOLS OF SMALL FISH. THE POD HEADED FOR OLD MEXICO AS THEY DID EVERY YEAR AND WERE SAFE UNTIL TODAY. THE MATRIARCH WAS QUICKLY FADING AND THE LARGER MALES TRY TO KEEP HER AFLOAT BUT KNEW OF THE STORIES OF THE HARPOON AND IT'S PAINFUL END BUT THEY HELD HER HIGH AS SHE WAS HOLY. SHE HAD LED FROM THE WAVES OF HUMBOLDT TO THE SEA OF CORTEZ EVERY YEAR WITH NO DANGER UNTIL NOW AS THE HARPOON DUG DEEPER AND FILLED HER WITH DREAD AND PAIN, SHE COULD ONLY THINK OF HER CALVES AND HER NEW ONE WHO SHE HAD NAMED AFTER THE LUMINOUS GREEN PLANKTON THAT COVERED SISTER DOLPHINS AND SHONE IN THE MOON. SHE WAS A LOVELY YOUNG LADY AND SHE SWAM AROUND HER MOTHER, THE MOTHER OF MANY UNTIL THE OTHER HUMPBACKS TOOK HER DEEP TO SAFETY AND AWAY FROM THE DEADLY BARBS OF THE SPEARS OF DEATH. ALL FOR THE OIL FOR LAMPS, THE LIPSTICK AND PERFUME TO MAKE THE HUMANS FEEL PRETTIER, SHE COULD ONLY THINK OF THE STORIES SHE KNEW AS, STILL LIVING THEY DRUG HER UP THE SLIDE TO THE KILLING FLOOR WHERE SHE WOULD BE SKINNED, DEAD OR NOT AND DISMEMBERED BY THE WHALERS WITH NO HEARTS AND THE BLOOD, HER LIFEBLOOD DRAINED ONTO THE DECK AND SHE SAW THE SUN ONE MORE TIME BEFORE THE LIFE LEFT HER AND HER LAST THOUGHT WAS OF THE LITTLE ONE AND HOW SHE WOULD FARE. SHE KNEW THEY WERE DEEP AND QUIET AND HER SOUL DOVE DEEP WITH THE POD AND SHE GAVE WAY TO THE KNIFE AND THE HARVESTING OF MAJESTY. SHE MADE A LAST NOISE, PERHAPS IT WAS AN SILENT SCREAM, TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO LIGHT THE LAMPS, SMEAR THE FACE WITH PAINT AND DAB THE SMELL BEHIND THE EAR, BUT THE WHALERS HEARD NOTHING AS THEY WENT ABOUT THE BLOODY BUSINESS THAT NEVER TOUCHED THEIR HEARTS. THE POD MOURNED AND SANG FOR HER SOUL FOR A GREAT DISTANCE AND WERE TO SAD TO TAKE SUBSTANCE AND THERE WAS NO FROLICKING AND NO AMOUNT OF RUBBING THE BARNACLES FROM ONE ANOTHER, THERE WAS SILENCE AND THE ONLY MOVEMENT WAS TO THE SOUTH, THE SEA OF CORTEZ WHERE THE MEXICANS LOVE TO WATCH THEM AND NEVER FISHED FOR THEM, THEY SWAM WITH THEM AND WORSHIPED THEM AND IT WAS ALWAYS GOOD LUCK TO SEE ONE JUMP SO HIGH TOWARDS THE SUN AS THE MATRIARCH HAD DONE, ONE LAST JUMP TO THE SUN......this written by miguel for the memory of the humpbacks that have felt the sting of the sword. QUOTE BY ANDRE' GIDE (MAY 18, 1930) FISH DIE BELLY UPWARD AND RISE TO THE SURFACE; IT IS THEIR WAY OF FALLING.

Love the treatment on this. Almost abstract yet obviously a whale breaking the surface. Great exhibition of power and glory.

Michael i am glad this is digital and not real.

Artist Reply: I feel the same way Joe, although some of it still goes on and I stay active in trying to let people know that it is not the right way to use our earth and creatures. So it is my small way of letting folks know how I feel. Thanks so much for commenting, Joe and have a really great weekend. Michael

Artist Reply: Kevin, my sincere thanks for your kind words. This is one of my crusades that didn't stop in the 70's. I still believe that should work a little harder to keep the whale safe. They are so majestic and kind. My gratitude to you for your great support. Michael

so very moving Michael!

Artist Reply: Karen, my thanks to you for your kind statements about a heartbreaking obsession of mine for years. It is with sad heart that I know there are still poachers and those that reap gain from the murder of these great majestic creatures of the sea and them when seeing them swim by on the luckiest of occasions, I am just so glad that they exists and still glide through the seas and rear their children as we do and sing and speak to one another. It is a bittersweet love I have for the whale and especially the Humpback whose songs I have heard recorded and whose great voices I will never forget. Michael

Kathie Nichols 19 Oct 2007

Stunning artwork Michael, portrays the story so well, so sad...so very very sad!!!!

Artist Reply: Kathie, it was difficult for me to try and become the voice of a matriarch whale but I know as a father the pain of never seeing one of my children again and the loss of my life weighed against the other, my life would mean nothing. It would be the undeniable sadness of, in my death, knowing I would see my family no more. All for the greed of men that hunt them. There is no way of knowing the depth of their discerning what exists in the human world but I believe that have some psychic ability to know how man thinks as they try to talk to us and they sing to each other and mourn each other's passing. In that they are like us so I must believe upon the losing of their lives they have some knowledge of the reasons why. It is sad, but again it is magnificent to have seen them and watched them frolic like children, always curious, always brave to explore. My thanks for your sincere words and your sympathy for my feelings about this matter. You are truly kind. Michael

such a wonderful animal and tearful words.... Blessed Work!

Artist Reply: Monique, you are a soft hearted and sincere woman, a great thing to be proud of. I am a bit more hard hearted about the act that is portrayed in the story. I have read and seen too much of what goes on. We are relatives of the whale and they try to speak to us. I have always wondered what they say, especially the Humpback which I have seen close up many times. Always gentle and communicative. My thanks to you dear friend, for all your kindness and support to my work. It is precious to me. Michael

Cindy Lemoi 18 Oct 2007

Michael, this is my pic of the day. I love this artwork and your text is very touching. As an animal lover, the senceless cruelty and killing horrifies me.

Artist Reply: Cindy my sincere gratitude for your choosing this as the pic of the day. That shows me how kind and loving you are. And your words also show me how dedicated to our animal friends and family you are. You should take pride in that action and feeling. I am truly moved by your statements. Michael

Carliss Mora 18 Oct 2007

Michael, so magnificent, yet so full of sorrow. I put myself in her place knowing how horrible it must be to be in the grips of needless death, but to be focused on the thoughts of my children. Wondering how they will survive, especially the youngest. A truly wonderful image of these beautiful mammals who live in the sea!

Artist Reply: Carliss, you have captured my exact meaning in this story and image. The mothering instinct which is holy, has taken over as she is floundering about close to death, needless death and as a mother she ponders the fate of her child. I am moved and grateful that you understood the message and commented so beautifully on it. My ultimate gratitude. Michael

So odd how such a heartbreaking story can be so beautiful at the same time. The image makes it even more poignant. Yes, the Inuit Tribe and others survive from the kill of these and other creatures with reverence, so that is not greedy slaughter. There is a tribe in Indonesia that does a ceremonial offering to the boars, pigs, etc that they will eat to thank them for giving their lives. If only this gratitude and respect was shown to all the creatures whose lives are taken for our use. "Use" being the operative word. Abuse of what we take is one thing; conscious, grateful use is another thing altogether-just my opinion.

Artist Reply: It is great to read some one's comments about the harvest of food for staying alive against the useless slaughter of our animal friends for capital gains. It sure is an ugly site to witness and one to try and stop. Sometimes you must right about things in a way that moves them to keep that thought in their memory. That was my motive. My thanks to you for understanding. Michael

Joanna Jungjohann 18 Oct 2007

so beautiful, so sad.

Artist Reply: Thanks for the commentary on the work. The narrative is a bit alarming to read but I wrote it to sort of jog people's memory about something I am passionate about. The painting sort of takes the sting out of the verbal. Thanks so much for your kind comments and support always. My appreciation. Michael

Lior Goldenberg 18 Oct 2007

Very artistic way to protest. Excellent, Michael!

Artist Reply: Lior, thank you so much for understanding my method. I am a long time proponent of the ban and yet still they allow the slaughter. It is counterproductive method of harvesting any sort of product as far as I know. There are a few Alaskan Indian Tribes that would die without the harvest, but they are spiritual about it as were The Original Americans and the Bison. I think there might be a spiritual connection between the Intuit tribes and the whales and they take just what they need, share it as a tribe and they are able to live and exist. In that end, I am more lenient in my thinking. But for monetary gain, I am devastated by the slaughter. My gratitude for your understanding and support of my work. I sincerely appreciate it all. Michael

Joke Schotting 18 Oct 2007

Robin Brown 18 Oct 2007

Michael, the image itself is simply beautiful & the creatures themselves mind blowing. If we could only find a way to communicate with them & offer them protection from us. This image could & should be used to help that cause. Gorgeous as ever.

Artist Reply: Robin, you are always so kind and full of life and generosity with your poetic comments. I surely appreciate it. I wish we lived closer that we share a dram or two for our friendship. You are a great man and a great humanitarian. Thanks so much for always supporting my work with great words and your friendship means the world to me. Michael

Alexandra Dvinitninova 18 Oct 2007

The human race is not far behind.

Artist Reply: Alexandra, thanks for commenting on this work. It is a true to life feeling I have about the final moments of these great members of our family and how they must agonize as we do when we are forced by death to part from out children. Our last thoughts must be of their well-being. And the whales are such majestic and stately beings on our earth. Michael
